Design Mechanics Talk

Dave Pannell (Director) advised when applying for a job the following should be considered; that work must be commercial and appropriate to the company plus a good knowledge of the company is required. Also I found it reassuring hearing the opinion of somebody in the design industry who could advise me how to submit an application. This was to submit a CV digitally and electronically and this should be followed up with a phone call, failure to do this meant they would not be contacted. In addition a strong portfolio was considered above a qualification.

It's a strange one, the portfolio / degree debate. I'm sick of seeing jobs in various design magazines professing that degrees are of the utmost importance.

It's nice to hear Dave say the opposite.

Can I just say that of the Students that presented their work, you all did very well.

I am proud to be a part of a group who has produced such high quality of work and has the confidence to present it in such a manor.

If we can produce work to the same standards then we will have done very well.

Well done.

Were you surprised to hear Dave say that a follow up phone call would be appreciated? I would personally think that this would be a nuisance to someone so busy, and what Dave said implied that it would actually improve your chances of getting a job.

Personally, I’d feel a bit uncomfortable ringing up a company asking if they had my CV. Looks like I will have to change my perception.

I agree you can only be taught so much and further more take so much in, but the Porfolio is an extension of your creativity. People with degrees can talk the talk but can they put it into practice, whereas with a portfolio it speaks for itself.

I hope to create a strong portfolio when we get to do the assignment.

Your work really inspires me. It's good to see that you can draw extremely well, and to make these drawing digitally is a big task. You seem to have no trouble at all digitalising your artwork.

Making my work digital is always the biggest shame for me as my sketchbook ideas are usually more professional and look a great deal better.

The presentation of your work went really well. To say no-one had a script ready we pulled off a good show

I think that it is important to listen to what Dave says as he is an employer in the industry. However we also have to remember that he is only one example of somebody in the industry.

Things that he prefers in his employees arent neccessary what other employers would prefer. I do think though that a follow up call after submitting a CV would be advantageous as it shows your desire to work for the company.

I think there’s a part about Dave you are missing and that is that he is mainly a sales person, though he is very skilled in print work, he is always out to sell, which could makes him ideal to lead DM as he can most likely talk a customer into buying a piece of print work. Though what confuses me is that if only marketers speak to the clients and designers done, what does Dave do as he is both? It is a question I didn’t think of on the day, maybe some of you no.

Thanks
